WWSA Gathering on the Bay 2026
Gathering on the Bay 10th Anniversary!

Women Who Sail Australia marked a significant milestone in 2026, celebrating the tenth anniversary of its much-loved annual event, the Gathering on the Bay (GOTB), held at Port Stephens. Over the past decade, this event has evolved into a vibrant and inclusive forum that brings together women from across the country and NZ who share a passion for boating, sailing, and life on the water. Held from 27–29 March at Nelson Bay Golf Club, the three-day gathering once again delivered a rich and varied program of presentations, workshops, and social events. True to its ethos, GOTB remained open to all women interested in boating, regardless of experience or membership, creating a welcoming space for learning, connection, and inspiration.
The program featured an impressive lineup of speakers covering a wide spectrum of maritime topics. Friday’s sessions included practical and technical insights, such as Genevieve White’s marine safety expertise and Kim Radford’s masterclass on smart clothing layering for offshore conditions. Attendees also enjoyed a Henri Lloyd fashion parade (with many purchases after seeing the best ways to layer clothing for all sailing weather session) and presentations ranging from marine hardware with Mel Yeomans to preserving maritime heritage with Kerrie Jeffreys and what’s available for boaters from Repco Commercial with Kelly Abraham. Viki Moore inspired future cruising plans with a session on preparing yachts for offshore adventures, showcasing destinations across the South Pacific. Turkish sailor, Dr. Banu Oney, shared her extensive adventures sailing the Red Sea and Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the less-travelled routes through the Great Lakes, the Pacific Northwest and the South Pacific—passages that present unique navigational, climatic, and logistical challenges.
Saturday’s program shifted toward personal stories and resilience. Sonia Robinson delivered a powerful presentation on determination and endurance, sharing her experience of undertaking a major yacht refit despite significant challenges. Dr Jeanne LeBlanc offered a thought-provoking session on coping with crisis at sea, drawing on both psychological expertise and real-life experience to explore how sailors respond to emergencies and how best to prepare for them. Bridget Canham shared insights from the iconic Sydney to Hobart race before Marine Rescue skipper Sue Freeman and her colleague Virginia rounded out the day with a discussion on the range of roles volunteers carry out for Marine Rescue NSW.
On Sunday, the focus turned again to adventure and achievement. Sophie Snijders captivated the audience with her account of sailing around Australia aboard Nakama. Sophie’s mum, Annette Hesselmans, then joined Sophie to share highlights from the demanding Melbourne to Osaka double-handed race. Val Nicholls shared her journey from tentative boat owner to confident skipper, recounting how she overcame self-doubt and built the skills needed to undertake a remarkable 3,500-nautical-mile voyage from Tasmania to Queensland and back. Her story resonated strongly with attendees, highlighting the importance of mindset, perseverance, and self-belief. Val’s presentation was followed by Jing Gandy, who provided a tribute to Captain Dick Gandy and how she has continued the Australian Boating Manual after his untimely passing. The Gathering wrapped up with a session on docking techniques with Annette Hesselmans.
Beyond the formal sessions, GOTB offered valuable opportunities for connection and community. The Saturday evening dinner was a highlight, bringing participants together in a relaxed and celebratory atmosphere, with partners and friends also welcome. Guest speaker Lisa Blair OAM entertained us with a lively Q&A session and a sneak preview of her next campaign, the ‘Arctic Impact Project’.
Additional activities extended the experience, including a pre-event Safety and Sea Survival course, a post-event sunset dinner cruise, and a ferry trip to Tea Gardens aboard the heritage listed ferry MV Tea Gardens. Book displays and having authors present and signing added another engaging dimension to the weekend.
The male partners and friends (Blokes on Boats (BOBs!)) were not forgotten with a Friday get-together and inspection of the Marine Rescue Port Stephens vessels.
As Women Who Sail Australia celebrates ten years of Gathering on the Bay, the event continues to embody its core mission: empowering women through knowledge, shared experience, and mutual support. The 2026 gathering not only honoured that legacy but also reinforced the strength, diversity, and growing confidence of women within Australia’s boating community. The next Gathering on the Bay will be held in March/April of 2028.
